In recent years, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have come under relentless attack from conservative circles. Critics claim these programs are unnecessary. Some even say they are discriminatory. In my view, the true motive behind dismantling DEI runs much deeper. It’s not just about rolling back racial progress—it’s also about controlling white women.

The Hidden Target: White Women’s Autonomy

DEI programs have played a significant role in helping women, including white women, carve out careers, achieve financial independence, and escape the constraints of traditional gender roles. Corporate diversity policies and affirmative action programs have directly benefited white women more than any other group, providing them with opportunities that would have been out of reach just decades ago.

By eliminating DEI, conservatives are effectively stripping away the support systems that allow women—particularly white women—to build careers and gain independence. The right doesn’t just want to end DEI because of its impact on race; they want to reverse the progress of gender equality as well.

The ‘Great Replacement’ Paranoia and White Birthrates

Much of the modern right-wing agenda is fueled by the so-called ‘great replacement theory,’ a baseless conspiracy that claims white populations are being intentionally diminished through immigration and diversity efforts. The push to eliminate DEI aligns perfectly with this fear: by forcing more white women back into traditional homemaker roles, conservatives hope to boost white birthrates and maintain their perceived racial dominance.

In their ideal America, white women wouldn’t be in boardrooms or law firms. They’d be at home in majority-white towns, having more white children, and reinforcing the traditional family structure conservatives romanticize. Policies attacking reproductive rights, childcare, and paid maternity leave are all part of this broader effort to pressure women into motherhood over career ambitions.

Controlling the Future by Controlling Women

Historically, when societies face demographic fears, they respond by controlling women. We’ve seen this playbook before: whether in Nazi Germany’s emphasis on white motherhood or American post-war suburbanization efforts, the goal remains the same—limit women’s choices to maintain a particular societal order. The attack on DEI is just the latest iteration of this old strategy.

The Fight for DEI Is a Fight for Women’s Freedom

Make no mistake: eliminating DEI isn’t just about race—it’s about power, control, and forcing women back into outdated roles. If conservatives were truly interested in meritocracy, they wouldn’t be attacking programs that have helped women and other marginalized groups succeed. Instead, they are waging a battle to turn back the clock, and white women are among their prime targets.

The push against DEI isn’t just about diversity—it’s about who gets to control their own destiny. And if we don’t fight back, the answer may no longer be women themselves.
