A number of white South Africans who immigrated to the United States in the early 2000s — some citing crime and instability back home — are now reassessing their decision and exploring a return to South Africa. Recent reporting indicates that rising living costs, concerns about public safety, and a desire to be closer to family are motivating some to move back.

One such individual, Andrew Veitch, relocated to California in 2003 after being robbed at gunpoint in South Africa. After more than 20 years in the U.S., he says the environment feels increasingly difficult.

“People are being shot in broad daylight,” Veitch said. “American citizens are being shot and killed. I don’t want to live in a place like this.”

South African officials report that roughly 1,000 former citizens have already reclaimed citizenship under a government program designed to help expatriates return. Thousands more are reportedly considering the option.

The trend comes after years of political debate in the United States over whether white South Africans face targeted persecution. Some American political figures have argued that Afrikaners — descendants of Dutch settlers — should receive special consideration for refugee status. South African authorities, however, maintain that there is no evidence of systematic persecution against white citizens, noting that crime affects all racial groups and disproportionately impacts Black South Africans.

While the Trump administration previously highlighted the plight of white South Africans and supported a resettlement pathway for some, the current movement back to South Africa suggests a more complex reality. For many, economic pressures, family ties, and shifting perceptions of safety are outweighing earlier concerns that prompted them to leave.

As more individuals weigh the pros and cons of life in both countries, the situation underscores how migration decisions are often shaped by a combination of personal experience, economic conditions, and changing circumstances — rather than any single political narrative.
