There is a growing crisis of conscience within the Democratic Party—and it doesn’t come from the Republican opposition or MAGA-style politics. It’s coming from within. And at the center of this reckoning lies a three-letter word with outsized influence: AIPAC.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, once seen as a bipartisan bridge for pro-Israel support, now increasingly serves as a political gatekeeper. It demands allegiance from Democratic lawmakers and weaponizes accusations of antisemitism against critics. It also bankrolls candidates who refuse to challenge Israel’s hard-right government. In doing so, AIPAC has eroded moral clarity and undermined the very values Democrats claim to uphold: human rights, democratic governance, and international law.

The urgency of this crisis can no longer be ignored, especially as Israel, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, intensifies its military operations in Gaza. Civilian casualties are mounting. Hospitals and schools lie in ruins. Children are starving. And America—through its unconditional support and billions in aid—is implicated.

Let’s be clear: the October 7th Hamas attack was barbaric. The murder and kidnapping of Israeli civilians was a war crime, full stop. But we can condemn that atrocity without losing our ability to criticize the disproportionate, often indiscriminate response of a right-wing Israeli government. This government is led by a man with a documented history of corruption, incitement, and a hunger for unchecked power.

Benjamin Netanyahu is not a defender of democracy. He is its manipulator. He has gutted Israel’s judicial independence and incited political violence. He has also used war as a tool to prolong his hold on power. His government is carrying out what international observers increasingly describe as war crimes. And yet, many Democratic politicians in the U.S. remain silent—not because they agree, but because they are bought.

The numbers don’t lie. According to publicly available campaign data, here’s a short list of New York Democrats and their haul from AIPAC and affiliated donors:

  • Rep. Laura Gillen – $94,905
  • Rep. Tom Suozzi – $312,000
  • Rep. Dan Goldman – $366,000
  • Rep. Gregory Meeks – $690,000
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – $997,000
  • Rep. Richie Torres – $1.5 million
  • Sen. Chuck Schumer – $1.7 million
  • Rep. Hakeem Jeffries – $1.7 million
  • Rep. George Latimer – nearly $20 million in AIPAC-backed Super PAC spending

This kind of money comes with strings—visible or not. How else can we explain the reluctance of so many Democrats to condemn Israel’s attacks on civilians? How else do we understand the silence around Islamophobic attacks on candidates like Zoran Mamdani? Mamdani, a rising star in New York’s progressive movement, has spoken out against both antisemitism and Palestinian oppression.

AIPAC doesn’t fear antisemitism. It fears scrutiny. It fears the emergence of leaders—like Mamdani—who defy the simplistic narrative that conflates criticism of Israel with hatred of Jews. It dreads losing its grip on a party base that is increasingly younger, more diverse, and more willing to speak the uncomfortable truth.

Here’s that truth: What Israel is doing under Netanyahu is not in the interest of democracy. It’s not in the interest of global Jewry. It’s making Jews less safe, not more. It’s fueling antisemitic conspiracy theories and pushing the fight against antisemitism into a moral gray zone. Here, the distinction between defense and atrocity becomes blurred.

Meanwhile, American taxpayers—many of whom struggle to afford healthcare, education, or housing—are subsidizing an Israeli state where all those services are freely provided. This is thanks in part to U.S. funding. Our bombs. Our money. Our silence.

It is time for accountability. For transparency. For a Democratic Party unafraid to say: we will not be held hostage by lobby groups. We will not conflate loyalty to Israel with loyalty to democracy. We will not ignore the suffering of Palestinian civilians because it makes political donors uncomfortable.

And we will not tolerate a foreign policy shaped by a political cartel that demands blind allegiance, not critical thought.

Democrats face a choice: continue down a path where donor money dictates morality—or reclaim the party’s soul by defending human rights without fear or compromise.

This reckoning is coming, whether the party likes it or not.
