In a move that’s raising eyebrows across Washington, former President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Herschel Walker, the former NFL star and Georgia Senate candidate, for the position of U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. The nomination, which requires Senate confirmation, comes as Trump continues to fill key diplomatic posts.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump praised Walker’s background: “Herschel has been a true ambassador to our nation’s youth, military members, and athletes for decades,” though critics are quick to point out the controversial nature of the selection.

Walker, who shot to fame after winning the Heisman Trophy at the University of Georgia and later in the NFL, is no stranger to the political spotlight. Just two years ago, he was in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. He ultimately lost to Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in a Georgia runoff. The runoff captured national attention.

His Senate campaign was anything but smooth sailing. NBC News reported in 2022 that Walker’s bid encountered financial issues. It also experienced management problems and faced questions about his past. Perhaps most damaging was an October surprise. There were allegations that the staunchly anti-abortion candidate had previously paid for a woman’s abortion in 2009. While Walker acknowledged writing a $700 check to an ex-partner, he firmly denied knowing it was for an abortion.

Trump has maintained a long friendship with Walker. He initially urged Walker to run for Senate. Trump stood by him during the controversy. He dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign. Walker has since returned the loyalty, appearing alongside Trump during the 2024 presidential race.

The nomination comes as part of a broader wave of diplomatic appointments by Trump, including notable picks like Charles Kushner for France, Kimberly Guilfoyle for Greece, and Tom Barrack for Turkey. With Republicans set to control the Senate next month, Walker’s confirmation process will likely be closely watched, adding another chapter to his already colorful political journey.
